I have learned so much about external business support since joining RTC North as a Scaleup Partner earlier this year. Something that I never used during my 16 years of owning a business from 2002 to exiting in 2018. I often say that I wish this programme would have been around during those times, but I would still have missed out as my business was in the Midlands. I now live with my family in the North East, to my knowledge nowhere else in the UK has a forward-thinking programme like Scaleup Northeast.
The programme is all about helping clients in our region. Having had my own business I know that it would have been very helpful indeed to have had access to a team of people that have been there before and have some knowledge, experience and advice of what I needed; it could have been that I was launching a new product or trying to get more clients or that I need to better financial forecasting and to understand where the costs were within the business. All these factors were challenges that I would have had, and I now know that Scaleup Northeast have the people to help, listen, advice and support.
Typically, a client in the North East region registers their interest here to join the programme. They would usually hear about Scaleup Northeast from social media sites like LinkedIn, business networking events, word of mouth, etc.
The companies wishing to join this free and exciting programme are typically growing/scaling businesses in the region that have the right mindset, however, they acknowledge that they need some support from a group of experienced individuals. There are some criteria to meet to join the programme.
The clients that join the programme get access to a dedicated Scaleup partner, the support that they give is huge; we work openly and honestly with the client to get them to empty their business bags on the table so that we can all see the challenges they are facing.
Once we have had the first initial meeting, we then produce an action plan to focus on the top priorities to help the client refocus and take back that control required to continue with the journey in the right direction. We have over 200 different clients on the programme offering many different products and services to the local and global marketplace, however, we find that they all have similar barriers to success, and these are usually to do with; leadership, sales & marketing, finance, talent and infrastructure.
I have seen so many clients benefit from joining the programme, whether it’s from direct mentoring, helping them with financial support or signposting them to a business that specialises in a specific area that they need. We are so pleased to be creating a huge unique network of like-minded clients in the area and we are now connecting them to each other more and more to help them help each other.
RTC North is delivering Scaleup North East in conjunction with the North East Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP) and is part-funded by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF). The programme is aimed at supporting North East-based businesses that can demonstrate both the hunger and the potential to achieve high levels of growth.
